The US pet care business passed the $100 billion mark in sales in 2020, and it hasn’t slowed down since. According to the American Pet Products Association’s (APPA) State of the Business report, sales in the pet business topped $136.8 billion in 2022, up 10.8% from the previous year. Bloomberg Intelligence (BI) says that by 2030, the US pet market will have made $195.6 billion in sales.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Global Agricultural Trade System says that dog and cat food exports went from $2.05 billion in 2021 to $2.4 billion in 2022, a rise of 20%.

- Pet food and toys cost $58.1 billion, 16.2% more than in 2021.

- Circana, a Chicago-based market research company, says that the market for all types of pet food grew between June 2022 and June 2023.
- Both dry dog food and dry cat food sales had good years with more growth than the previous years. Dry dog food sales increased 19.7% in the 52 weeks ending June 18, 2023. This is higher than the 12.3% growth seen between 2021 and 2022. After going up 13.2% between 2021 and 2022, sales of dry cat food went up 21.8% in 2023. Nestlé Purina and Mars Petcare are the two biggest names in dry dog food. Nestlé Purina and Big Heart Pet Brands are the two biggest names in dry cat food.
- Wet dog food sales increased 12.5%, and cat food sales increased 14.6% compared to the previous year.
- Even though the refrigerated/frozen category for dog and cat food is much smaller, sales in that category went up again by 31.7% for dog food and 19.4% for cat food. The area also saw strong sales growth from 2021 to 2022, with rises of 35.8% for dog food and 22.5% for cat food.
- It’s presently easy to find dog and cat treats in this area. From $3.54 billion in 2022 to $3.95 billion in 2023, the market for dog treats grew by 12.8%. Big Heart Pet names and private label names led the way. There was a 15.1% rise in sales of cat treats from $1.12 billion in 2021 to $1.27 billion in 2023, with Mars Petcare and Nestlé Purina coming in first and second, respectively.
